Michael Galligan, a local attorney with Galligan and Newman Law Offices in
McMinnville, has been a friend of Magness Library in many ways over the years and
just recently donated a Grand Piano to reside in the auditorium, where concerts are
held throughout the year. With painting as a long time hobby, Mike dreamed of one
day presenting an Art Show to benefit the library. On February 12, 2011, his dream
came true and Magness Library came alive with more than 400 people celebrating
the show.
With a grand festive table of tasty food that included smoked salmon donated and
cooked by Everett Brock, tenderloin donated and cooked by Wally Bigbee, baked
ham cooked by Steve Grove, rolls baked by Bickford Farms, dips and crackers by
Mary Robbins, cheeses of all kinds with fruit by Rhonda Galligan, and many
desserts. The beautiful flowers were provided and arranged by the McMinnville
Garden Club.
Andy Gay played the new grand piano throughout the evening and added to the
festive atmosphere. The auditorium on the upper level of Magness Library had been
converted from a large meeting room to an art gallery over the last three weeks with
thirty-three of Mike Galligan’s paintings hung and labeled as to title and price. Mike
professionally with beautiful frames. Many paintings were accompanied by framed
poetry, also written by Mike Galligan. These painting prices included the additional
framed poem. Some of these paintings and poems were written about people dear
to his life, such as his son, his mother, his sister-in-law and friends.
The program that was given to each guest upon arrival listed each piece of art and
also noted on the front that the Art show is dedicated to the memory of Mrs. Lucille
Galligan, Mrs. Ida Ramsey and Mrs. Elizabeth Hoover. Mike also made sure that
everyone knew this was an “Opening Night Party” and he fully intended for everyone
to enjoy themselves. Throughout the night, buyers made their way into the genealogy
room and made purchases of specific paintings. Twenty-six out of thirty-three
paintings were sold and all buyers agreed to allow their painting to hang in the library
until March 16 that marks the end of the art show.
The Magness Library Community House and Library Board of Trustees are forever
grateful to Mike Galligan for his generosity that resulted in a donation to the library of
over $10,000 and a marvelous event for the community to enjoy in the beautiful
historic library that we all love.
